When I was growing up alongside my brother and sister, my Mother used to say “isn’t it nice how we can all be different, yet we can all get along?” --typically stated while breaking up one of our not infrequent arguments or after insults had been hurled. I do think it would be nice if we could all get along, or at the very least, be polite. Perhaps politeness starts, or is furthered, by re-examining some of our common sayings – like the “early bird gets the worm”. Another saying I wonder about, is “up and at ‘em!” Who are they, and why are we at them? Why aren’t we with them?
