Wave Goodbye My Heart
Terri Rack

When I first started writing poetry I was told to stay away from love poems because they are the hardest to write.

Apparently love had already been written about in every possible way and nothing would sound original.  Can you really beat Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Sonnet 43 "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways..."  I believe this poem speaks to the individuals that have been in love with someone, who, for whatever reason, doesn't return or recognize the depths of their love.  It is about the longing one goes through and the willingness to wait forever to try and win that person's love.  Everyone has been caught up in the emotions of wanting someone and the journey that follows.  It feels like something has taken your heart from your chest and you no longer have any control.  I hope this poem captures that and the mosaic, which depicts a dove carrying off a heart in its mouth, causes you to sympathize and feel the love the speaker carries.
